#16 Augustana took advantage of nine walks and six hit batters by Wayne State pitching, resulting in six runs scored, as the Vikings scored eight runs in the final two innings to surge late for a 16-8 win over the Wildcats and win two of three games in the weekend NSIC series played at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls. The host Vikings are now 28-9 and 24-9 in the league while WSC drops to 11-21 and 10-18 in NSIC games.
Following a scoreless opening inning, WSC opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the second.
CJ Neumann delivered a two-run single up the middle that brought home
Eric Standish and
Peyton Barnes, who both walked. Neumann and
Conner Fiene (single) later scored on a two-run single to right field by
Alex Logelin for a 4-0 WSC lead.
Augustana got two runs back in the bottom of the second to trim the advantage in half, but the 'Cats got the two runs back in the top of the third for a 6-2 lead.
Andrew Hanson reached on a Viking throwing error and scored on a
Bryce Bisenius single to right field for the first run. Bisenius later scored on a balk.
The Vikings scored once in the bottom of the fourth to reduce the WSC lead to 6-3, but the Wildcats got the run back in the top of the fifth to take a 7-3 lead when Logelin singled to open the frame and later scored on a wild pitch.
Augustana used a combination of walks and home runs to score five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-7 lead. The Vikings had three home runs in the inning combined with three walks and a hit batter to score five runs.
Wayne State tied the score in the top of the sixth at 8-8 with one run when
Noah Roberts walked and scored on a Fiene RBI single.
The hosts regained the lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh getting a double and two walks to load the bases followed by a two-run single for a 10-8 Augustana lead.
Augustana then put the game out of reach with a six-run eighth inning that gave the Vikings a 16-8 win.
Logelin was 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBI, a walk and stolen base. Fiene finished 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and RBI while Brendan Madsen was 2 for 5 with two singles. Neumann had a two-run single while Bisenius had the other Wildcat hit.
Starting pitcher
Ryan Obrecht was one of seven Wildcat pitchers used in the contest and suffered the loss.
The Wildcats close out the regular season at home Wednesday afternoon hosting Upper Iowa in a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
