'Cats fall in season opener at Northwest Missouri State 4-2

    Northwest Missouri State scored two late goals to defeat Wayne State College 4-2 Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action played in Maryville, Missouri.  The host Bearcats improved to 2-0 with the win while the Wildcats dropped to 0-1 following the season opener.
    The host Bearcats opened the scoring in the ninth minute as Annelize Alexio scored giving Northwest Missouri State a 1-0 lead.
    WSC tied the score midway through the first half when senior Megan Phillips found the back of the net with an assist from Payton Haliburton to make the score 1-1 at the 27:50 mark.
    Northwest Missouri State regained the lead at the 38:50 mark of the half on a goal from Teagan Blackburn for a 2-1 Bearcat advantage.  
    The Wildcats responded less than two minutes later when junior Skylar Stueckrath scored an unassisted goal at the 40:19 mark to make the halftime score 2-2.
    The score remained 2-2 until the 74th minute when Blackburn recorded her second goal of the game for a 3-2 Northwest Missouri State lead.
    NMSU added an insurance goal inthe 83rd minute when Kaylie Rock scored for a 4-2 Bearcat victory.
    Northwest Missouri State recorded one more shot than WSC (19-18) while both teams had 12 shots on goal.  NMSU had 10 saves in the contest to eight for WSC while the host Bearcats had one more corner kick than the Wildcats 4-3.
    Phillips led WSC offensively with five shots and one goal followed by Annika Syrud with four shots, all on goal.  Morgan Rhodes added three shots for WSC.
    Goalkeeper Sidney Truman was credited with eight saves in the loss while allowing four goals.
    Wayne State begins a six-game home stand Friday afternoon hosting #23 Missouri Western in a 3 p.m. contest at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
