Nate Mohr poured in a career-high 27 points including six 3-pointers to lead Wayne State College in a 77-71 NSIC men's basketball victory at Bemidji State Saturday evening. The Wildcats are now 11-8 overall and 8-5 in the NSIC South following the win while the host Beavers drop to 6-13 and 3-12 in the NSIC North.
A back-and-forth first half featured five ties and six lead changes between the two clubs.
WSC held a 12-10 lead 3:30 into the contest. Bemidji State scored 10 of the next 12 points and took their biggest lead of the game at 20-14 at the 13:22 mark.
The biggest lead for the 'Cats in the first half was three, 25-22, following a
Jay Saunders basket with 8:24 left in the first half.
BSU then went on an 11-0 run over the next 2:58 and grabbed a 33-25 advantage with 5:26 to play before halftime.
The host Beavers still held a 35-27 lead at the 3:34 mark, but WSC closed the half on a 10-2 run and used a
Justin Eagins 3-pointer right before halftime to tie the score at 37-37.
Wayne State scored the first six points of the second half and never trailed again.
The 'Cat took their first double digit lead at 57-47 with 11:51 to play and grabbed their biggest lead of the night at 67-54 with 6:28 remaining.
Bemidji State rallied and got within four at 71-67 with 1:29 to go.
Mohr's three-point play with 47 seconds on the clock put the 'Cats ahead 74-67 and his two free throws with 12 seconds to play sealed Wayne State's second road win of the season, 77-71 at Bemidji State.
Mohr's career-high 27 points led Wayne State in scoring. The Glenwood, Iowa native was 8 of 13 from the field and 6 for 10 behind the arc, another career-best.
Justin Eagins also reached double digits for WSC with 17 points.
Wayne State made 26 of 54 shots from the field for 48 percent, including 9 of 24 from the 3-point line. The 'Cats were 16 for 21 (76%) at the foul stripe.
Travis Bianco, a transfer from Valdosta State, scored 22 points for Bemidji State. Mohamed Kone and Derek Thompson added 17 and 15 points respectively.
BSU shot 43.9 percent making 25 of 57 shots. The Beavers were 7 of 26 from 3-point range and 14-16 at the free throw line.
Bemidji State out-rebounded Wayne State 36-28 despite 10 rebounds from
Cody McCullough.
Justin Eagins was credited with both Wildcat blocked shots in the contest.
WSC will be at home next weekend, hosting #20 Upper Iowa Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Winona State Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
