Box Score The #1 ranked Wayne State College volleyball team suffered their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, falling in a five-set battle at #5 Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minnesota. Scores of the match were 27-25, 20-25, 18-25, 25-18 and 15-13. WSC is now 24-1 and 14-1 in the league while the host Mustangs are 20-3 and 12-3 in NSIC play.
The first set was a back and forth battle with 13 ties and four lead changes and only a pair of three point leads by SMSU. WSC trailed 21-19, but rallied and took a 23-22 lead on a
Kelsie Cada kill. A kill by
Rachel Walker gave the 'Cats set point at 25-24 but the host Mustangs scored the final three points of the set for a 27-25 win.
WSC hit .293 in the opening set and was led by
Maggie Brahmer with six kills and
Taya Beller five.
The 'Cats bounced back in the second set, never trailing to post a 25-20 set win. After WSC opened with a 9-4 lead, SMSU scored five straight to even the set at 9-9 to force a Wildcat timeout. The 'Cats scored the next three points, highlighted by a
Havyn Heinz service ace, to take the lead for good and win the set.
WSC recorded six blocks in the set, leading to 13 SMSU attack errors, while Heinz and Walker each had aces.
The Wildcats built a 2-1 set lead by taking the third set 25-18. Trailing early 6-3, WSC scored six straight points and never trailed again.
Beller had six kills to pace WSC in the third set followed by Brahmer with five.
The host Mustangs rebounded in the fourth set, recording 19 kills to control the Wildcats 25-18 to force a fifth set. Tied at 7-7, SMSU took the lead for good with four straight points and WSC never got closer than two points again.
The fifth set saw the 'Cats jump out to early leads of 3-0 and 9-4 to force a pair of Mustang timeouts. SMSU then stormed back and took an 11-10 lead forcing a WSC timeout.
Trailing 12-11, WSC used a service error and kill by Beller to even the score at 13-13. But a Wildcat service error followed by a Mustang kill on match point sealed the SMSU rally for the 15-13 fifth set victory.
WSC held a .217-.207 edge in hitting percentage over SMSU, but the Mustangs had 81 kills to 50 for the 'Cats. SMSU had 39 attack errors to just 15 by WSC while the Wildcats had twice as many blocks as SMSU 16-8.
Beller led WSC with 19 kills followed by Brahmer with 17. Beller posted a career-best 10 blocks to record her first double-double of the season.

Jordan McCormick with 11 and Cada 10.
Wayne State will return to Rice Auditorium Tuesday evening hosting Augustana in the 15
th annual Black Out/Pack the House Night match starting at 6 p.m.
