#3 Wayne State defeated Augustana in three sets (25-20, 25-12, 25-19) in mid-week NSIC volleyball inside of Rice Auditorium Tuesday evening in front of a Black Out Night crowd of 1,002. Wayne State moves to 25-1 on the year with a 15-1 in NSIC play. Augustana falls to 16-8 on the year with an 8-8 NSIC record.
Maggie Brahmer would lead Wayne State with 17 kills in the match followed by
Taya Beller with nine.
Jordan McCormick would lead the Wildcats with 15 digs followed by
Rachel Walker with 14 and Jesse Brandl with 11.
Taya Beller would also add six blocks in the win for the Wildcats.
Augustana started the first set on a 4-1 run behind a Kia Kriener kill. Wayne State would bring the score within one point at 5-4 before the Vikings went on a 3-0 run to force the first timeout from WSC at 8-4. The Wildcats would get their first tie of the set forcing an attack error from the Vikings making it 12-12. A block from Beller and McCormick would give the 'Cats a 14-13 lead forcing a AU timeout. Wayne State came out of the timeout on a 5-2 run behind two kills and two blocks from Beller along with blocks from McCormick and
Rachel Walker making it 19-15. Back-to-back kills from the Vikings brought AU within two at 20-18 before Wayne State ends set one on a 5-2 run to win set one 25-20.
Brahmer led the 'Cats in set one with five kills. She was followed by Beller with three. Walker led WSC in digs with four in the first set. Beller added three blocks in the first set win for the 'Cats.
Wayne State opened the second set on a 7-0 run behind a Brahmer kill to force an Augustana timeout. Wayne State would continue on their run after the timeout to force the second timeout to make it 14-4 WSC after a
Havyn Heinz ace. Wayne State would end the second set on a 5-2 run that included two kills from Beller and one from Brahmer to win set two 25-12.
Brahmer led WSC with six kills in set two followed by Beller with five. Jesse Brandl and McCormick would both have five digs to lead the 'Cats in set two.
The third set would be back and forth to begin with the game being tied at seven before WSC would go on a 6-2 run behind a
Taylor Bunjer and Beller block to make it 19-9 Wildcats. The Wildcats would increase their lead to as many eight at 20-12 after a Brahmer kill. Wayne State would win set three after an AU rally that brought the lead down to six 25-19.
Brahmer would lead WSC for the third time in set three with six kills followed by Bunjer with four. McCormick would have seven digs leading the Wildcats in set three. Bunjer and Beller would add three blocks each in the set.
Wayne State will be at home this coming weekend hosting Winona State at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 28th followed by Upper Iowa at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 29th.
