Four Wildcat softball players recorded a multi-hit game Sunday morning as the Wildcats defeated Newman 9-3 at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. Wayne State is now 1-5 on the season while Newman drops to 2-3.
WSC opened the scoring right away in the first inning as senior
Kamryn Sparks recorded an RBI single, getting her first of three hits with two outs in the first. Sophomore
Jenna Etmans scored in the inning after reaching on a single. Etmans advanced to second on the play on a throw to get senior
Kortney Buresh out at home.
WSC gave up one run in the top of the second when the Jets tied the game 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Wildcats answered with a six-run rally in the bottom of the second inning. Junior
Riley Holmberg reached first with no outs on a throwing error. She would come around and be the first Wildcat score of the inning.
Buresh provided an RBI before senior
Kim Vidlak homered to left field to make the score 6-1. WSC added another run in the inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead into the third.
The score stayed at 7-1 until Newman scored in the top of the fourth. WSC answered right away with a two run fourth inning. WSC's first run of the inning was on an RBI from Holmberg who reached on a fielding error from the Jets. Holmberg would come around to score as
Natalie Arbizu had an RBI infield hit.
Newman would put one more run up in the sixth as WSC would hold on to record their first win of the year 9-3.
Sophomore pitcher
Callie Carraher recorded her first decision of the season, picking up the win for the Wildcats.
Wayne State outhit Newman 14-8 in the contest as Sparks went 3 for 4 in the contest with one RBI and one run scored. Vidlak had a 3-run home run for the Wildcats as well.
Buresh and Holmberg each had a stolen base for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats play Truman State at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.
