Pittsburg State used a five-run second inning to keep the lead for good as the host Gorillas posted a 9-5 non-conference college baseball win over Wayne State Monday afternoon in Pittsburg, Kansas to take two of three games in Wayne State's season opening series. WSC is now 1-2 on the year while PSU is 4-6.
Wayne State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when leadoff batter
Cam Madsen singled and later scored on a bases loaded walk to
Noah Roberts for the first run. The second run came when
Alex Logelin singled and later stole home.
The host Gorillas scored five runs in the second inning on three hits, along with two hit batters and one walk, to take a 5-2 lead.
After Pittsburg State scored one more run in the third for a 6-2 lead, WSC got one run back in the top of the fourth when
Colin Lynam reached on a Gorilla error and scored on a groundout by
Noah Roberts to make the score 6-3.
The Gorillas added to their lead in the sixth inning with two runs for a 8-3 advantage.
WSC scored twice in the top of the seventh with two outs and no runners on when Logelin and
Andrew Hanson hit back-to-back homers over the left field fence to cut the PSU lead to 8-5.
The Gorillas closed out the scoring with one run in the bottom of the seventh for a 9-5 win.
Pittsburg State held an 11-7 advantage in hits over the Wildcats.
Logelin led the 'Cats at the plate going 3 for 5 with a homer, double and RBI. Hanson added a solo homer for the other WSC extra base hit. Madsen, Roberts and
Chase Douglas each singled while Roberts ended with two RBI.

Cade Herrmann was one of seven Wildcat pitchers used in the contest and charged with the loss in 1 2/3 innings of work. Reliever
Josh Renken worked a team-high 2 1/3 innings in the game.

Josh Kilzer also saw action out of the bullpen for the Wildcats.
Wayne State is scheduled to play a three game non-conference series at Lindenwood in St. Charles, Missouri Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
