Wayne State could not overcome a five-run second inning by Notre Dame College of Ohio Thursday evening as the Wildcats dropped a 6-4 decision at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational in Davenport, Florida. The Falcons are now 4-9 with the win while Wayne State falls to 4-5 on the year.
Following a scoreless first inning, Notre Dame accounted for five runs in the second inning to jump in front 5-0.
Wayne State got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI groundout from third baseman
Chris Cornish that scored
Noah Roberts (hit by pitch) to make the score 5-1.
The Falcons scored what would be their final run of the game in the top of the fifth inning for a 6-1 cushion.
Cornish delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning that brought home
Colin Lynam (single) to cut the Notre Dame lead to 6-2.
The Wildcats added another run in the seventh inning when pinch hitter
Travis Baily laced an RBI double to center field scoring Lynam, who doubled, cutting the Falcon lead to 6-3.
WSC added one run in the ninth inning when
Alex Logelin singled and later scored on a wild pitch to make the final score 6-4.
Wayne State had one more hit than Notre Dame College 11-10. Lynam ended the game 3 for 5 with a double and two runs scored.
Nate Sailors added a pair of singles going 2 for 4 while Cornish and Baily were each credited with doubles.
