St. Cloud State held Wayne State to just five hits as the Huskies swept the Wildcats 4-1 and 11-0 in a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader played Saturday at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. WSC drops to 11-9 and 5-2 while the Huskies move to 12-9 and 4-3 in the league.
The opener saw the Huskies score three runs in the first as SCSU starter Riley Ahern outdueled Wildcat starter
Brody Sintek for a 4-1 win.
St. Cloud State scored their other run of the game in the fourth inning and had a 4-0 lead.
WSC was hitless until the fourth inning when the 'Cats strung together three consecutive singles with two outs from
Andrew Hanson,
Chris Cornish and
Colin Lynam as WSC got on the board in the fourth to make the score 4-1 on a Lynam RBI single that brought home Hanson.
Neither team scored in the final three innings as the Huskies won the opener 4-1.
SCSU had one more hit than WSC 6-5. Wayne State's five hits were singles by five different Wildcats.
Colin Lynam had an RBI single while Hanson, Cornish,
Kyler Essink and
Chase Douglas added singles.
Sintek (2-2) was the hard luck loser, allowing just six hits and four runs with three walks and three strikeouts.
Ryan Petersen worked a hitless seventh inning in relief.
The second game saw St. Cloud State take an 8-0 lead after three innings while holding the Wildcats to just one hit in an 11-0 seven inning win.
St. Cloud State scored two runs in the first and added three runs in the second and third for an 8-0 lead.
WSC was hitless again until the fourth inning when Cornish belted a two-out double down the left field line.
The Huskies added three more runs in the fifth for an 11-0 lead and SCSU lefthander Jack Habeck retired nine of the last 10 Wildcat batters to complete the shutout win.
