#8 Augustana blanked Wayne State 5-0 and 8-0 in 5 innings in the NSIC softball opener for both teams on a frigid Monday afternoon at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The host Vikings move to 18-5 and 2-0 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 3-20 and 0-2 in league play.
The opener saw the host Vikings limit WSC to just three hits in a 5-0 win.
Augustana scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings for a 3-0 lead and added two runs in the sixth for the 5-0 final score.
Trailing 1-0 after two innings, WSC recorded all three hits in the third inning but left the bases loaded and did not score.
Kamryn Sparks,
Kortney Buresh and
Riley Holmberg each singled for WSC in the contest.
Junior starter
Hadley Chvatal fired a complete game effort in the loss, charged with three runs on five hits over six innings of work with six strikeouts and five walks.
The second game saw the 8th-ranked Vikings complete the sweep with an 8-0 win over the Wildcats in five innings.
Augustana snapped scoreless tie with three runs in the third followed by two in the fourth and three more in the fifth for the 8-0 final in five innings.
WSC had their only two hits of the game in the first inning, leaving two runners on base on a two-out double from
Kim Vidlak and a singled by
Paiton Tornberg.
Augustana held a 9-2 edge in hits over the Wildcats in the second game.
Freshman starter
Samantha Felt (0-5) was tagged with the pitching loss in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Hadley Chvatal and
Grace Lucka each worked in relief for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats are scheduled to visit Concordia-St. Paul Saturday at 12 p.m. and at #16 Minnesota State Sunday at 12 p.m.
