Hadley Chvatal struck out eight batters over six innings to lead the Wildcats to a 6-3 win over Seton Hill (PA) Wednesday morning at the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament in Auburndale, Florida. WSC improves to 3-14 while the Griffins drop to 8-2.
Wayne State scored single runs in the first and second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Riley Holmberg connected on a one out double to right field and then was plated by a
Jenna Etmans two out RBI single to make the score 1-0 after the first inning. The scoring continued in the second with a leadoff single from
Alle Perea then advancing on a wild pitch and scoring on a
Dylan Sweeney RBI single to left center.
Seton Hill answered with single runs in the second and third innings to tie the score at 2-2.
The Wildcats regained the lead for good scoring once in the fifth and two runs in the sixth for a 5-2 advantage.
Kortney Buresh led off the top of the fifth with a single up the middle and then came all the way around to score on a sacrifice bunt by
Riley Holmberg and a throwing error by the Griffins when Buresh was taking third as well on the bunt allowed her to score and make the score 3-2. The Wildcats started the sixth with
Natalie Arbizu reaching on a hit by pitch followed by a
Kamryn Sparks single who was pinch ran for by
Abby Husing. The lead was increased when
Madison Gomez doubled to right bringing across both runners to pad the advantage to 5-2.
The Griffins responded with a run in the bottom half of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3 but WSC kept the margin at three by plating another run in the seventh for a final score of 6-3.
Wayne State got runners on base early in the seventh with a pair of singles from Etmans and Tornberg. After a wild pitch that advanced both runners into scoring position and a Sparks walk, Seton Hill catcher attempted a back pick at third which resulted in a throwing error that plated Etmans and would be the end of the scoring for a final of 6-3.
WSC outhit the Griffins 10-4 with two of the 10 being doubles. Wildcats were led by
Kortney Buresh going 2 for 3 with a walk and one run scored as well as
Jenna Etmans adding two hits of her own with a double and RBI.
Madison Gomez went 1 for 3 with the big 2 RBI double that kept the game out of reach in the sixth.
Hadley Chvatal picked up the win for the Wildcats, improving her record to 2-8. Her strong outing consisted of six innings allowing three hits, three runs (two earned), three walks and striking out eight Griffins in the process. She was relieved by Sami Felt who threw a clean seventh to hault any kind of Seton Hill comeback to record a save.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play another game Wednesday afternoon against Nyack College of New York.
