Game Recap: Softball |

Two homers, eight RBI from Jenna Etmans carries Wildcats in sweep over Northern State

Game 1 - Wayne State 6 Northern State 5

Game 2 - Wayne State 17 Northern State 6 (5 inn.)

Sophomore second baseman Jenna Etmans had two home runs and eight RBI, including the game-winning three-run homer in the seventh inning of the opener, to carry Wayne State in a 6-5 and 17-6 Northern Sun Conference softball sweep over Northern State Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.  The games were moved from Aberdeen, South Dakota to Wayne due to cold weather.  WSC is now 11-28 and 8-10 in the NSIC while NSU falls to 10-28 and 2-14 in league games.
The opener saw WSC rally with three runs in the top of the seventh inning on Etmans' three-run blast to give the 'Cats a 6-5 win.
Both teams hit the ball hard in the first inning, combining for six runs and six hits, as NSU held a 4-2 lead.  Kortney Buresh and Riley Holmberg opened the game with singles.  Buresh scored on a sacrifice fly from Kim Vidlak while Holmberg crossed home plate on a NSU fielding error for the second run.
WSC cut Northern State's lead to 4-3 in the third with one run when Holmberg singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Wolves increased their lead to 5-3 win one run in the bottom of the fifth and held the lead until Etmans' heroics in the seventh.  Holmberg singed and Vidlak doubled to left center field putting runners on second and third with one out.  Etmans' then crushed a ball over the left field wall giving WSC the 6-5 lead.
Freshman reliever Samantha Felt came on in the seventh, replacing starter Callie Carraher, and retired the Wolves in order in the seventh to seal the come-from-behind win.
WSC had 10 hits in the game, led by Holmberg going 3 for 4 with three runs scored.  Vidlak was 2 for 3 with two doubles while Paiton Tornberg added two hits.  Etmans had a three-run homer while Madison Gomez doubled.
Carraher (3-3) earned the pitching win, working six innings and allowing five runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.  Felt came on in the seventh and fired a perfect frame to notch her second save of the season.
The second game saw WSC complete the sweep as six different players recorded at least two hits in the Wildcats' 17-6 win.
WSC opened with a five-run first inning on four hits.  Vidlak, Etmans and Lauren Laudick each had RBI singles.
After Northern State scored three runs in the bottom of the first, WSC matched that in the second for an 8-3 lead.  Tornberg had a three-run double for the key hit in the inning.
Both teams scored three runs in the third to make the score 11-6.  Wayne State's runs came on an Etmans three-run blast to center field.
The Wildcats clinched the win with a six-run fourth inning on three hits and two Wolves errors.  Madison Gomez had a two-run single in the inning while Tornberg doubled and Holmberg singled.
Wayne State had 15 hits in the win.  Etmans was a perfect 3 for 3 with a homer, five RBI and three runs scored.  Tornberg was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI while Vidlak was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBI.  Buresh, Holmberg and Laudick each added two hits in the win.
Felt worked the entire second game to pick up the win, now 5-7 on the year.  She fired her third complete game of the season while allowing 10 hits and six runs.
Wayne State is scheduled to host Winona State Wednesday in an NSIC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
