#5 Wildcat Volleyball opens up NSIC Play with Sweep of #3 Concordia-St. Paul

#5 Wayne State volleyball sweeps #3 Concordia-St. Paul 26-24. 25-23, 25-16, Friday evening inside of Rice Auditorium. The win moves the Wildcats to 10-0 on the season and 1-0 in NSIC play while Concordia-St. Paul falls to 7-2 and 0-1 in NSIC play.
 
The Wildcats would force 23 attacking errors from the Golden Bears behind 14 blocks. Wayne State would also put up a .359 hitting percentage in the win.
 
Kelsie Cada would lead in kills for the Wildcats with 14 in the match on a .343 hitting percentage. She was followed by Taya Beller with 10 kills with a .588 hitting percentage. Beller would also add four blocks in the match. Jessie Brandl would also add 10 digs in the victory.
 
The first set was very tightly contested with a total of 10 ties and eight lead changes throughout the set. The set would start back and forth with the 'Cats and the Golden Bears trading points before Concordia-St. Paul would go on a 5-0 run behind five kills from five different Golden Bear players to build a 13-9 lead early in the first set. The Wildcats would trail at 17-12 before they scored four in a row behind kills from Beller and Cada to bring the score back to 17-16. An Ace Serve would force Concordia-St. Paul to take a timeout still leading 21-20. Wayne State would score the first three points out of the time out behind three Golden Bear attacking errors before going on to win the set 26-24.  Beller led the Wildcats with four kills in the first match.
 
Set two would see a total of eight tied scores and five lead changes in another closely contested set. The set would begin much like the first set with no one going up by more than two points. The largest lead was built by Concordia-St. Paul at 15-12 behind a pair of kills forcing a Wayne State timeout. Four attack errors and a kill from Beller would give the 'Cats a 18-16 late in the second set. The Wildcats from this point would not give up the lead for the rest of the set as they went on to win a tightly contested second set at 25-23. Cada led the Wildcats in the set with six kills on a .400 hitting percentage.
 
The Wildcats and the Golden Bears would trade points to begin the third set before kills from Cada and Maggie Brahmer would force Concordia-St. Paul to take a timeout with Wayne State leading 8-5. Wayne State would continue to build the lead to as many as 11 in the third set at 20-9. Wayne State would end up going on to win the set at 25-16. The Wildcats would put up a .500 hitting percentage in the third set behind five kills from Cada.
 
The Wildcats will be at home again Saturday afternoon hosting Minnesota State at 1 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
