Wayne State Suffers 78-52 Setback to MSU Moorhead

The Wayne State men's basketball team suffered just their fourth loss of the season this evening to #25 MSU Moorhead 78-52 in Moorhead, Minnesota. The Wildcats fall to 11-4 on the year (6-3 NSIC). The Dragons improved to 12-2 on the year (7-1 NSIC). 

Wayne State never had the lead this evening as MSU Moorhead jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead on the 'Cats to open up the game. The Wildcats would then open up a 8-2 run of their own to cut the lead to 14-10 after a jumper from Justin Eagins. Another 11-0 run from the Dragons would force the second timeout from the 'Cats at the 9:39 mark with the Dragons up 25-10. Wayne State would cut into the Dragons lead again before halftime after another Eagins jumper making it 27-21, before the Dragons went on another 7-3 run to end the half leading 34-24. 

Eagins was the leading scorer in the first half for the 'Cats with eight points while Nick Ferrarini led the Wildcats with four rebounds. The Wildcats shot 34.6% from the field while the Dragons shot 46.9% in the first half. MSU Moorhead edged WSC in the rebounding battle 19-17. 

MSU Moorhead opened up the second half with some hot shooting building their lead up to 50-30 early into the second half before WSC would go on a 8-0 run into the second media timeout of the half down by 12 with 9:37 left to play. The closest Wayne State would cut into the lead was 56-45 with 7:22 left to play before the Dragons opened up another run to make the lead back up to 20 at 68-48 with 4:03 left in the game. MSU Moorhead would go on to win the game 78-52. 

Jordan Janssen would be the leading scorer for the Wildcats with 17 points and adding five rebounds and four assists to his stat line before fouling out. Eagins would add 13 for the 'Cats while also bringing in five rebounds. Ferrarini would also add five rebounds in the loss for the 'Cats. 

MSU Moorhead would shoot 27-59 from the field (45.8%) while Wayne State shot 20-53 (37.7%). The Dragons would also lead the rebounding battle 41-31 and in turnovers forcing 17 Wildcat turnovers to the Dragons nine. 

Wayne State will be back in action Saturday, January 7th when they take on Northern State with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m. in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
