'Cats post gritty 1-0 victory over Concordia-St. Paul

            Despite being out-shot 17-2, Wayne State used an early second half goal by sophomore Paige Pemberton to hold up in a 1-0 victory over Concordia-St. Paul in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer played Thursday afternoon at the WSC Soccer Pitch. The win was the first by WSC over CSP since 2015, snapping a seven-match winless streak against the Golden Bears.  Wayne State is now 5-4-2 and 3-2-2 in the NSIC while Concordia-St. Paul is 4-5-2 and 2-3-2 in league play.
            Concordia-St. Paul had the wind advantage in the first half, outshooting the 'Cats 12-0, but the contest remained a 0-0 tie.
            Wayne State came out aggressive in the second half, recording its first shot on goal by Maia Vacks 2:39 into the second half.
            Minutes later, the Wildcats got on the scoreboard at the 54th minute when Reagan Allen fed Paige Pemberton who shot from the left side and scored for what turned out to be the lone goal of the contest.
            The Golden Bears fired off three shots with two on goal in the following five minutes to try and tie the score but Wildcat goalkeeper Hayden Wallace made a pair of saves to preserve the 1-0 advantage.  CSP had two more shots the remainder of the half, neither one on goal, and Wayne State held on for the 1-0 victory.
            Concordia-St. Paul finished the contest with a 17-2 edge in shots and 7-2 in shots on goal over the 'Cats.  CSP held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks and was called for two more fouls than WSC 8-6.
            Pemberton's goal was her first of the season for Wayne State.  Vacks also had a shot on goal for WSC.
            Wallace recorded seven saves for her fourth shutout of the season for Wayne State.
            The Wildcats resume play on Friday, October 13th hosting Augustana to close out a four-game home stand in a 3 p.m. contest at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
