Wayne State College used timely defense and a three-touchdown performance from junior quarterback
Nick Bohn to defeat #17 Minnesota Duluth 28-18 Saturday afternoon on homecoming in a Northern Sun Conference football game played Saturday afternoon at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne. Both teams now 5-1 on the season and 4-1 in conference play.
All three wins by Wayne State over Minnesota Duluth have come when the Bulldogs were nationally ranked – 7-0 over #1 UMD in Wayne in 2011, 31-28 at #11 UMD in 2021 and Saturday's 28-18 win in Wayne over #18 UMD.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring on a 30-yard field goal by Curtis Cox putting UMD ahead 3-0 midway through the first quarter.
Wayne State scored on the first play of the second quarter when Bohn fired a 10-yard scoring pass to
Kendrick Watkins-Hogue, capping an eight-play 86-yard drive that put WSC ahead 7-3 at the 14:56 mark of the second quarter.
Minnesota Duluth regained the lead on the ensuing drive, marching 75 yards on seven plays as quarterback Kyle Walljasper lunged just past the goal line on third and goal to score from one yard out putting the Bulldogs back in front 10-7.
The Wildcats responded on the next drive with Bohn finding the end zone on fourth and goal from the one that gave the 'Cats a 14-10 lead at intermission.
Minnesota Duluth took the second half kickoff and marched 74 yards on 17 plays covering 10:08, but the Wildcat defense stopped UMD quarterback Walljasper on fourth and goal from the one.
After the two teams traded punts, Wayne State got a 75-yard touchdown run from redshirt freshman
Latravious Boyd with 43 seconds to play in the third quarter to take a 21-10 lead.
The Bulldogs again answered following the Wildcat score as Walljasper tossed a 28-yard scoring strike to Jimmy Durocher cutting the Wildcat advantage to 21-18 with 11:49 remaining.
UMD forced a Wildcat punt and got the ball back at their own 35. Walljasper was then intercepted by Wayne State's Joe Morrison, who returned the ball 46 yards to the UMD 29.
WSC converted the turnover into game-clinching points as Bohn ran for a three-yard score with 8:20 remaining to close the scoring in the 28-18 Wildcat victory.
Wayne State outgained Minnesota Duluth in the contest 353-337. The 'Cats had 208 yards rushing and 145 passing while the Bulldogs had 265 on the ground and just 72 passing.
Boyd led the Wildcat ground attack with 99 yards on seven carries, highlighted by his 75-yard scoring run. Bohn added a season-high 55 yards rushing with two scores.
Throwing the ball Bohn was 14 of 24 for 145 yards and one TD. Watkins-Hogue had seven catches for 62 yards followed by
Ashten Schmaderer with three grabs for 29 yards.
Junior linebacker
Dexter Larsen had 10 tackles for the Wildcats followed by
Jacob Byrd with eight.
Wayne State will be at home again next Saturday hosting #14 Bemidji State in the Hall of Fame Game starting at 12 p.m. at Bob Cunningham Field.
