The Wayne State College baseball team dropped their season opener Saturday afternoon at Missouri S&T in Rolla, Missouri by a 10-8 score.
After the host Miners scored twice in the bottom of the first, WSC came back with three runs in the top of the second to grab a 3-2 lead.
Hunter Babe opened with a double and scored on an RBI groundout by catcher
Kyler Essink. Later in the inning
Cade Lynam tripled to left field bringing home
Tommy Roland (walked).
Tied at 3-3 entering the third, WSC regained the lead at 4-3 on a
Colin Lynam solo homer.
But Missouri S&T took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth for a 8-4 cushion.
The 'Cats came back with two runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-run double by Babe that drove home
Quinn McCafferty (walk) and
Colin Lynam (singled).
The host Miners matched the two WSC runs with their own two in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead back to 10-6.
Wayne State scored two runs in the top of the sixth on a two-out rally as
Colin Lynam had a two-run single that brought home
Cade Lynam (walk) and McCafferty (singled) to reduce the Miner lead to 10-8.
Both teams had 10 hits in the game. Babe finished 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
Cade Lynam was 2 for 3 with three RBI while
Colin Lynam ended 2 for 6 with a pair of runs scored. Second baseman
Nick Ripa added two hits for the Wildcats.
Junior starting pitcher
Brody Sintek suffered the pitching loss, charged with eight runs on eight hits. Reliever
Adam Eggert worked the next 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs and two hits while sophomore righthander
Josh Kilzer closed the contest with 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief striking out one.
The two teams face off again Sunday in a double header in Rolla, Missouri.
