Wayne State and William Jewell College split a non-conference college baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Liberty, Missouri as the Wildcats captured a 7-2 win in the opener while the host Cardinals came back with a resounding 21-2 win in the second game to gain a split. WSC is now 3-3 on the season while WJC is 2-3.
The opener saw
Trey Wells and
Colin Lynam each belt two-run homers while sophomore reliever
Josh Kilzer fired four innings of hitless relief to lead the Wildcats in a 7-2 victory.
WSC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the opener as freshman
Carter Thomas walked and crossed home plate on a
Colin Lynam double with Lynam later scoring on a
Dylan Jutze single for the second run.
The host Cardinals produced single runs in the second and third innings to tie the score at 2-2, but WSC took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Wells blasted a two-run homer to left center field, scoring Jutze, who doubled earlier in the inning.
Wayne State added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring. Wells opened the inning with a walk and crossed home plate on a single up the middle by Thomas.
Colin Lynam followed with a two-run blast over the left field fence to close the scoring.
WSC had eight hits in the win, led by
Colin Lynam going 2 for 3 with a homer, double and three RBI. Wells added a two-run homer while Jutze finished 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, RBI and run scored.
Nick Barnett also doubled for the Wildcats.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Corbin Kirk earned the win, working three innings and allowing two runs on three hits. Kilzer was stellar in relief to gain a save with four innings of hitless relief, striking out three while allowing one walk.
The second game was all William Jewell as the host Cardinals erupt for a pair of six run innings while taking advantage of 15 walks by Wildcat pitching for a 19-2 win to split the twinbill.
After William Jewell opened the game with six runs in the first, WSC came back with two runs in the top of the second as
Nick Ripa opened with a single and later scored on a groundout.
Nate Cunningham added an RBI double that brought home Wells (walked).
But that's all the scoring from Wayne State as the Cardinals scored at least one run in every inning except the sixth to down the Wildcats.
Cunningham had two of Wayne State's five hits in the game, going 2 for 2 with a double and RBI.
Quinn McCafferty also doubled while
Kyler Essink and Ripa singled.
Starting pitcher
Nathan Anderson suffered the loss allowing six runs in the first inning.

Trey Wells also worked on the hill for the Wildcats.
Wayne State and William Jewell will conclude their three-game series with a nine inning game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
