Wayne State College outhit Fort Hays State 11-9 but the Wildcats left 10 runners stranded on base in a 6-2 loss to the Tigers Saturday evening at the Washburn Softball Tournament in Topeka, Kansas. FHSU is now 7-5 while WSC falls to 1-6 on the season.
Fort Hays State plated single runs in the second, third and fifth innings for a 3-0 lead and scored three more runs in the top of the seventh for a 6-0 advantge.
Wayne State had left two runners on base in the second, third and fifth innings and got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh scoring their two runs while also leaving the bases loaded.
Natalie Arbizu led off the seventh with a double and
Riley Holmberg singled with one out to put runners on the corners. An
Abby Husing single down the left field line brought home Arbizu and later in the inning
Paiton Tornberg singled up the middle to score Holmberg. But the 'Cats left the bases loaded and Fort Hays finished with the 6-2 win.
Wayne State held an 11-9 edge in hits over theTigers. Holmberg, Husing and
Madison Gomez each had two singles at the plate. Husing and Tornberg had RBI hits for WSC.
Sophomore
Grace Lucka (0-2) was tagged with the pitching loss in four innings of work. Freshman
Sophie Stuart worked the final three innings and allowed just two hits and no earned runs with two strikeouts.
Wayne State will conclude play at the Washburn Tournament Sunday facing Emporia State at 1:30 p.m. and host Washburn at 5:30 p.m.
