#20 Washburn 3 Wayne State 0 (shortened to five innings due to rain)
#20 Washburn defeated Wayne State 3-0 in a rain-shortened five inning contest Sunday evening to close play at the 2023 Washburn Softball Tournament in Topeka, Kansas. The host Ichabods improve to 15-3 with the win while the Wildcats fall to 1-8.
Washburn scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings against the Wildcats and held a 7-4 advantage in hits during the contest.
Wayne State had scoring chances in the first and fourth innings, leaving two runners on base both frames.
In the first,
Riley Holmberg led off with a walk and Paiton Torneberg singled putting runners at the corners but the 'Cats could not score.
In the fourth inning,
Kim Vidlak walked and Tornberg singled giving WSC runners at second and third with no outs following a wild pitch. But Washburn got out of the jam recording a pop up and pair of strikeouts to keep the 'Cats scoreless.
Holmberg reached base all three times recording a pair of singles and a walk for WSC. Tornberg also had two singles for WSC.
Freshman starter
Sophie Stuart (0-2) was tagged with the loss in the circle allowing three runs on five hits in four innings recording two strikeouts.
Grace Lucka relieved to end the contest that was called due to rain with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Wayne State resumes play on Sunday, March 5
th when the Wildcats begin their annual spring break trip to Florida opening a 10-game slate against Northwood (Mich.) at 11:30 a.m.
