Northwood (Mich.) 8 Wayne State 1
The Wayne State College softball team opened their annual Florida spring break trip Sunday afternoon with an 8-1 loss to Northwood (Mich.) at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Timberwolves improve to 9-6 with the win while WSC falls to 1-9.
Northwood opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second for a 2-0 lead.
The score stayed 2-0 until the Wildcats scored in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 2-1 as senior shortstop
Kim Vidlak doubled and scored on a
Louisa Stowman double to left field with two outs.
The Timberwolves took a 3-1 lead with one run in the fifth, scored two in the sixth for a 5-1 lead and added three more runs in the seventh to post an 8-1 victory.
Northwood held a 10-4 advantage in hits over WSC and also used eight walks and a hit batter from Wildcat pitching. Senior center fielder
Riley Holmberg went 2 for 2 to lead WSC at the plate, also reaching base on a walk. Vidlak and Stowman each doubled to round out Wayne State's hitting.
Sophomore
Grace Lucka started the game and suffered the loss in the circle, working the first 4 1/3 innings. Senior
Hadley Chvatal relieved one inning with Lucka coming back into the game to finish in the circle for six total innings of work.
Wayne State was scheduled to face Saint Anselm College of New Hampshire Sunday afternoon in another game at the National Training Center Spring Games in Florida.
