Game Recap: Baseball |

Colin Lynam's big day at plate helps Wildcats sweep Fort Hays State

Game 1 - Wayne State 8 Fort Hays State 4

Game 2 - Wayne State 3 Fort Hays State 1

Junior outfielder Colin Lynam went 5 for 8 at the plate with a home run and six RBI's Wednesday afternoon to help Wayne State College sweep a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Fort Hays State in Kansas by scores of 8-4 and 3-1.  WSC is now 5-4 overall with the host Tigers dropping to 7-10.
The opener saw junior outfielder Colin Lynam go 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBI couple with five innings of strong relief from sophomore Josh Kilzer as the Wildcats took the opener 8-4.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning.  Quinn McCafferty opened the game with a single to left and Carter Thomas walked.  Colin Lynam followed with an RBI single up the middle to score McCafferty while Thomas later scored on a sacrifice fly from Nick Ripa for the two Wildcat runs.
WSC came back with three runs in the second.  Again, it was the top of the order that created the offense for the 'Cats as McCafferty walked, Thomas singled and both crossed home plate on a Colin Lynam three-run homer to left for a 5-2 Wildcat lead.
Wayne State pushed the lead to 8-2 in the fourth with three more runs.  Lynam's RBI single to center scored McCafferty who singled.  Thomas singled and later scored on a wild pitch for the second run while Kyler Essink's sacrifice fly to center field brought home Lynam.
Fort Hays State cut the WSC lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the final score 8-4.
Wayne State had one more hit than Fort Hays State 8-7.  Seven of the eight Wildcat hits came from the top three batters in McCafferty, Thomas and Lynam.  Lynam was 3 for 4 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored.  Thomas went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and three runs scored with McCafferty going 2 for 4 with three runs scored.
Sophomore reliever Josh Kilzer was stellar in relief with five strong innings to improve his record to 2-0.  He gave up just two hits and two runs with four strikeouts.  Starter Corbin Kirk worked the opening frame and was charged with two runs on five hits.  Freshman Braden Cannon pitched the final inning and struck out two of three batters faced.
The second game saw four Wildcat pitchers hold the Tigers to just four hits as Wayne State completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory.
The 'Cats got off to another quick start in the second game opening with a two-run first.  McCafferty singled to left center to start the contest.  Colin Lynam singled with McCafferty stealing third and scoring on a Nick Ripa fielder's choice for the first run while Lynam stole home for the second WSC run.
WSC took a 3-0 lead in the fifth when McCafferty was hit by a pitch and later scored on a infield single to shortstop by Lynam.
The lone run scored by Fort Hays State came in the fourth inning as both teams had just four hits in the game.
Lynam was 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored.  McCafferty singled and scored twice while Braden Cannon had the other Wildcat hit.
Senior Ryan Obrecht (2-0) earned the win with four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts.  Dylan Rodgers, Jackson Shelburne and Cannon each worked one inning of relief as Cannon posted the save with a perfect seventh inning that included one strikeout.
The Wildcats resume play on Thursday, March 9th when Wayne State faces West Virginia Wesleyan at the Russ Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida to open their annual spring break trip.
