Grand Valley State wins marathon 11-9 slugfest in 12 innings over Wildcats

            Grand Valley State of Michigan outlasted Wayne State 11-9 in a 12-inning marathon Sunday afternoon to close the Wildcats' annual spring break trip to Florida at the Russ Matt Baseball Invitational in Winter Haven.  The Lakers move to 9-4 with the win while Wayne State falls to 6-8.
            The wild game lasted three hours and 57 minutes and featured a combined 20 runs, 35 hits, eight errors and 422 pitches. 
            Grand Valley State opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the first, but Wayne State countered with three runs to make the score 4-3.  Quinn McCafferty opened the game with a walk and scored on a Colin Lynam triple to right center field for the first run.  A Hunter Babe singled brought home Lynam with the next run while Babe scored when Nate Cunningham reached on a Laker error for the third run.
            WSC tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the third as Colin Lynam doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Nick Barnett singled to right center field.
            Both teams scored twice in the top of the fourth to make the score 6-6.  McCafferty walked and later scored on a wild pitch while Colin Lynam blasted a solo homer to center field for the second run.
            The Wildcats took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the fifth without a hit as Braden Cannon reached first on a third strike wild pitch and scored on a Trey Wells groundout.
            Grand Valley State evened the score at 7-7 in the top of the seventh and neither team scored in the final two innings sending the game into extra innings.
            In the top of the 12th, Grand Valley State erupted for four runs on six hits to take an 11-7 advantage.
            WSC rallied in the bottom of the 12th, scoring two runs on two hits to go with two Laker errors with two outs and no runners on base before leaving the tying run on base to end the game.
            Noah Strizek reached base on an error and moved to third on a double by McCafferty.  Carter Thomas delivered a two-run double to left field to make the score 11-9.  Colin Lynam reached on an infield error to put runners on the corners, then a flyout ended the game and the Wildcat rally.
            Grand Valley State had 23 hits in the game to 12 for Wayne State.  Colin Lynam was 3 for 5 with a double, triple, home run and two RBI with three runs scored.  McCafferty finished 2 for 5 with a double and three runs scored.  Carter Thomas and Noah Strizek each added doubles.
            Wayne State used seven pitchers in the game.  Starter Jackson Shelburne worked five innings.  Reliever Adam Eggert was tagged with the loss in 2/3 innings of work allowing four runs in the 12th inning.
            Wayne State is scheduled to open Northern Sun Conference play at home on Saturday afternoon (March 18) hosting Minnesota Crookston in a three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday and single nine-inning game Sunday at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.
