Eight different Wildcats had hits while pitchers
Grace Lucka and
Sophie Stuart combined on a two-hitter to lead Wayne State in a 6-1 non-conference softball win over Cedarville (Ohio) Tuesday afternoon at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. WSC is 3-12 following the win while Cedarville slips to 4-7.
Wayne State produced five runs in the third inning on five hits to grab the early lead. Designated player
Louisa Stowman opened the inning with a triple and quickly scored on a two-run homer by senior
Kim Vidlak for a 2-0 lead.
Madison Gomez followed with a single to right field and later scored on a
Natalie Arbizu single to center field for a 3-0 Wildcat advantage.
Riley Holmberg and Stowman later added bases loaded walks to complete the five-run inning.
The 'Cats added another run in the fifth inning without a hit, taking advantage of three Yellow Jacket errors to take a 6-0 lead. Arbizu reached base on a one-out error and later scored on a failed pickoff attempt at third.
Cedarville avoided the shutout scoring one run in the bottom of the sixth to complete scoring in the contest.
Wayne State had nine hits in the win to just two for Cedarville. Arbizu was the lone Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Vidlak homered and had two RBI while Stowman tripled and had an RBI and run scored.
Lucka fired five strong innings to earn the pitching win for WSC, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman
Sophie Stuart worked the final two innings and did not allow a hit with one run, two walks and one strikeout.
Wayne State resumes play in Florida on Thursday facing Lewis (Ill.) at 8 a.m. and Illinois-Springfield at 10:30 a.m. at the National Training Center Spring Games.
