West Virginia Wesleyan defeated Wayne State 4-0 Tuesday morning at the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament in Clermont, Florida. The Bobcats are now 7-5 after the win while WSC falls to 2-12.
The story of the game was Bobcat starting pitcher Abigail O'Shields, who limited Wayne State to just three hits while striking out 10 Wildcat batters in the contest.
West Virginia Wesleyan scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and added two more runs in the sixth.
Wayne State had scoring chances in the second, fifth and sixth innings. In the second,
Hayley Murphy singled and
Lauren Laudick walked with two outs to put two runners on, but WSC ended the inning without scoring.
Laudick led off the fifth inning with a double, but again the 'Cats could not get another hit to keep the inning alive.
The 'Cats had runners at first and third with just one out in the sixth but failed to score again after
Louisa Stowman walked and moved to third on a single from
Madison Gomez.
West Virginia Wesleyan had eight hits in the game to three by the Wildcats. Laudick doubled for the lone extra base hit while Gomez and Murphy each singled.
Sophomore starter Sami Felt suffered the loss in the circle despite her fourth complete game effort of the season. She allowed four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Wayne State will face Cedarville (Ohio) Tuesday afternoon in another game at the National Training Center Spring Games.
