Wildcats spilt games against Minnesota State

    The Wayne State softball team split games against Minnesota State Saturday 7-1 loss in game one and a 14-9 win in game two. Wayne State moves to 6-21 on the season with a 1-3 record in the NSIC. Minnesota State moves to 13-9 on the year with a 2-2 record in the NSIC. 

GAME 1 - MSU 7 WSC 1 

    Minnesota State never trailed in game one after scoring a solo home run to open the game. Wayne State would tie up the game in the bottom of the third after Kim Vidlak hit a triple out to right field followed by a Riley Holmberg single through the right side. The Mavericks wouldn't look back in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth and four runs in the top of the fifth to take game one 7-1 over the Wildcats. 
    
    MSU would out hit WSC 10-5 in the win while having one error to the Wildcats two errors. Vidlak was two for three from the plate with the only run scored for the 'Cats. Other top performer was Holmberg (2-4, 1 RBI). 


    Grace Lucka would pitch five innings for the Wildcats producing seven strikeouts on 68 strikes thrown. Sophie Stuart would also pitch two innings producing three strikeouts for the 'Cats in the loss. 


GAME 2 - WSC 14 MSU 9

    Wayne State would use an explosive 10 run second inning to down the Mavericks 14-9 in the second game of the doubleheader. The Wildcats would open the game in the first inning scoring four runs. In the second, every Wildcat player had a hit along with a Vidlak two run shot to help the Wildcats build a 14-0 lead in the second inning. The Mavericks would start to chip away at the Wildcat lead, scoring two in the third, two in the fourth and four in the fifth after a three run homer in the fifth making the score 14-8 in favor of the Wildcats. Minnesota State would score one in the top of the seventh to make the final score 14-9 for a Wayne State victory. 
    
    Wayne State would out hit the Mavericks in game two 17-8 while having two errors to Minnesota State's three errors. 
Vidlak would be the leading hitter for the 'Cats in game two going 3-4 from the plate with a home run, three runs scored, and two RBI's. Annika Manzanares would also have three hits for WSC along with three RBI's. Natalie Arbizu would also have three RBI's for WSC. 
    
    Samantha Felt would earn her third win on the season pitching five innings and producing three strikeouts for WSC.

    Wayne State will be in action Sunday April 2nd hosting Concordia-St. Paul in a doubleheader beginning at noon from the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.
