Winona State used late scoring surges in both games to take an NSIC softball doubleheader from Wayne State Tuesday afternoon by scores of 11-4 and 10-5. The games were moved from Winona to Wayne due to a weekend snowstorm in southern Minnesota and played at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex. The Warriors improve to 30-11 and 13-3 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 10-32 and 5-14 in league games.
The opener saw Winona State score seven runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to erase a 4-2 deficit as the Warriors downed the 'Cats 11-4.
Riley Holmberg opened the game with a triple and scored on a double by
Lauren Laudick for the first WSC run.
After Winona State scored two in the bottom of the first, WSC countered with a three-run second for a 4-2 lead. The 'Cats had five hits in the frame with Holmberg contributing an RBI single.
The score stayed 4-2 Wayne State until the Warriors came up with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on nine hits to take a 9-4 lead and added two insurance runs in the sixth for an 11-4 victory.
Winona State had 16 hits in the game to eight by WSC. Holmberg was 2 for 4 with a triple, RBI and run scored while Laudick was 2 for 4 with a double and RBI.
Sophomore starter Sami Felt suffered the pitching loss in 4 2/3 innings of work. Junior
Callie Carraher pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
The second game saw the Warriors score five runs late to break open a 5-3 game as Winona State completed the sweep with a 10-5 win.
After Winona State hit two homers and scored five runs in the first, WSC cut the deficit to 5-3 in the third with three runs.
Madison Gomez had an RBI double while Vidlak and
Paiton Tornberg accounted for RBI singles.
A four-run fourth for the Warriors gave Winona State a 9-3 lead.
WSC scored their final two runs in the sixth to make the score 9-5. Laudick laced a two-run double to left center field that scored pinch-hitter
Louisa Stowman (double) and
Abby Husing (walk). Winona State added one run in the bottom of the sixth for the 10-5 final score.
Both teams had eight hits in the game. Gomez was 2 for 4 with a double while Vidlak added two singles. Stowman and Laudick each had doubles.
Freshman starter
Sophie Stuart was tagged with the pitching loss in 3 1/3 innings. Sophomore
Grace Lucka worked the remaining 2 2/3 innings.
The Wildcats will be at home this weekend hosting Minnesota Crookston Saturday at 12 p.m. and Bemidji State on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
