Tornberg's walk off helps WSC split with Bemidji State on Senior Day

            Senior third baseman Paiton Tornberg had a special Senior Day for the Wayne State softball team Sunday vs. Bemidji State, going 5 for 8 at the plate with six RBIs including a walk off two-run single in the bottom of the seventh in the second game to give the Wildcats a 4-3 win to split a NSIC doubleheader with the Beavers Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.  BSU scored two runs in the seventh in the opener to win 5-4.  WSC is now 12-34 and 7-16 in the league while Bemidji State is 19-19 and 8-8 in the league.
            Bemidji State held a 3-0 lead in the opener after 2 ½ innings until the 'Cats scored three in the bottom of the third to tie the score at 3-3.  Tornberg had a two-run double with Madi Gomez adding an RBI single.
            WSC took a 4-3 lead in the fourth when Tornberg's double down the right field line scored Kim Vidlak, who reached on an error.
            The score remained 4-3 until Bemidji State got a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning to steal a 5-4 win from the Wildcats.
            Wayne State outhit BSU 9-8, led by Tornberg going 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI.  Gomez went 2 for 4 with an RBI while Vidlak singled and scored two runs.
            Sophomore Sami Felt was the hard luck loser firing a complete game, allowing just eight hits and five runs (three earned).
            The second game saw the Wildcats rally with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to return the favor and split the NSIC twinbill with a walk off win.
            The game was scoreless until the fourth when Tornberg blasted a solo homer to left field for a 1-0 lead.
            Bemidji State then scored three runs in the fifth on three hits and a Wildcat error for a 3-1 lead.
            The Beavers kept the 3-1 lead until the bottom of the seventh when WSC made the Senior Day rally.
            Abby Husing singled and was the lone runner on base with two outs.  Lauren Laudick walked and then Vidlak singled to right field bringing home Husing to cut the Beavers' lead to 3-2.  Tornberg followed with a single to center field that brought home Laudick and Vidlak with the walk off win.
            WSC held an 8-6 edge in hits over Bemidji State.  Tornberg was 3 for 4 with a homer, two singles and three RBI.  Vidlak was 2 for 4 with a double and RBI while Dylan Sweeney also doubled.
            Sophomore reliever Grace Lucka earned the win with three innings of scoreless relief.  Junior starter Callie Carraher started the game and worked four scoreless innings allowing just two hits.
            Wayne State is scheduled to host Sioux Falls Tuesday at 2 p.m. in an NSIC doubleheader.
