The fourth-ranked Wayne State College volleyball team cruised past host Concordia-Irvine Friday evening 25-11, 25-12, 25-17 at the Golden Eagle Invitational in Irvine, California. The Wildcats move to 2-0 on the season while the host Golden Eagles are 1-1.
The first set between the two clubs was close early until the 'Cats used four service aces late to score 10 of the final 11 points in what turned out to be an easy 25-11 set win.
WSC held a 9-7 lead after the two teams traded four lead changes with five ties. The 'Cats started to take control with three straight service aces from
Taya Beller and another by senior setter
Rachel Walker as WSC started quickly.
The second set saw WSC hit .531 with 17 kills and no errors on 32 attacks as the Wildcats posted a 25-12 second set win.
Beller had a team-high six kills while Hartington Cedar Catholic freshman
Laney Kathol had five kills on five attacks. Senior
Kelsie Cada added a pair of service aces in the set win.
Wayne State never trailed in the third set, ending with a 25-17 win to complete the sweep. The 'Cats forced seven errors on Concordia Irvine that included four blocks while
Maggie Brahmer and Beller each had five kills.
Wayne State finished the match with a .385 hitting percentage while holding the Golden Eagles to .135. WSC held a 47-29 edge in kills and 54-43 in digs while recording seven service aces in the win.
Beller had a team-high 14 kills, hitting .565 in the win. Brahmer contributed nine kills while Kathol, Cada and freshman
Channatee Robles each posted seven kills.

Wayne State plays two more matches Saturday at the Golden Eagle Invite in California, battling Cal State Dominguez Hills at 4 p.m. Central Time and Azusa Pacific at 9 p.m.
