Wayne State College used a penalty kick goal from
Maia Vacks in the 26
th minute to post a 1-0 win at the University of Sioux Falls Thursday evening in the Northern Sun Conference women's soccer opener for both teams played at Bob Young Field in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Wildcats improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the league while the host Cougars drop to 0-4 and 0-1 in the NSIC.
The host Cougars held a 12-5 shot advantage over the Wildcats in the first half, but Vacks notched her fourth goal of the season thanks to a penalty kick at the 26:21 mark for what turned out to be the lone goal of the contest.
Wayne State held a 7-4 edge in shots during the second half, but the host Cougars held an overall shot advantage of 16-12 with WSC enjoying an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams had eight corner kicks in the contest while WSC was called for 14 fouls to 10 on the Cougars.
Vacks led WSC offensively with four shots and four shots on goal while scoring the lone goal of the contest.
Riann Daas and
Skylar Stueckrath each recorded three shots and two shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Hayden Wallace earned her first shutout of the season, playing all 90 minutes and recording two saves in the victory.
Wayne State will host Southwest Minnesota State Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in an NSIC contest at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
