Wayne State used a pair of late first-half goals and two more in the second half to post a 4-0 shutout win over William Jewell College on a hot Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer played at the WSC Soccer Pitch. The Wildcats are now 2-0 on the season while the Cardinals drop their season opener and are 0-1.
The two teams played a defensive battle for much of the first half until the 'Cats broke through with a pair of goals in the final seven minutes of the opening half.
Fifth year senior
Skylar Stueckrath blasted a shot from just outside the box for the first goal at the 38:17 mark. WSC added another goal less than three minutes remaining before halftime as freshman
Tyler Donaldson scored in front of the net off a feed from Alaina Sorenson putting the 'Cats in front 2-0 at intermission.
Midway through the second half WSC scored again as junior
Maia Vacks scored her third goal of the season on a assist from Stueckrath to make the score 3-0 and the 'Cats closed the scoring near the 84
th minute as
Kaelyn Reeves found the back of the net on a pass from
Leah Bennett making the final score 4-0.
Wayne State held a 14-2 edge in shots and 9-2 in shots on goal. Vacks recorded a team-high three shots with two on goal and one score. Stueckrath scored a goal and added an assist while Donaldson and Reeves each added goals.
Senior
Hayden Wallace picked up the win, playing 69:52 and recording two saves. Senior reserve goalkeeper
Sidney Truman worked the final 20 minutes and did not face a shot.
The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend facing McKendree (Ill.) Friday at 1 p.m. in Kansas City, Missouri followed by a Sunday afternoon match at Washburn in Topeka, Kansas starting at 1 p.m.
