Late scoring surge carries St. Cloud State women past Wildcats 58-52

            Wayne State erased a 21-4 first quarter deficit to take a three-point lead midway through the fourth quarter only to watch St. Cloud State outscore the Wildcats 11-2 in the final five minutes as the host Huskies defeated Wayne State 58-52 in a Northern Sun Conference women's basketball game Friday evening at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minnesota.  SCSU is now 9-6 and 6-5 in the NSIC while WSC slips to 4-11 and 1-11 in league games.
            It was a slow start for the Wildcats as WSC opened the game making just 2 of 14 shots (14%) in the first quarter while the host Huskies connected on 9 of 14 shots (64%) to take a 21-4 lead to open the game.
            The tables were turned in the second quarter as the Wildcats outscored the Huskies 17-4 as WSC held SCSU to 2 of 11 shooting and the first half ended with St. Cloud State leading 25-21.
            St. Cloud State pushed the lead to nine points (32-23) early in the third quarter, butt the Wildcats battled back and used a pair of free throws by Wayne freshman Brooklyn Kruse to tie the score at 38-38 after three quarters.
            Wayne State took their first lead of the game with 6:44 to play on a Carsyn Boswell 3-pointer, giving the 'Cats a 45-44 lead.  A basket by Rachel Dahlen put the 'Cats in front 47-44. 
            Following a SCSU 3-pointer, Wayne State's Maya Fitzpatrick converted a three-point play with 4:57 to play giving the 'Cats a 50-47 lead.
            Wayne State never scored again until a basket from Kruse with just 31 seconds left, ending an 8-0 Husky scoring run that made the score 55-52.
            St. Cloud State then made three of four free throws in the final 16 seconds to finish with the 58-52 win.
            Fitzpatrick led Wayne State in scoring with 11 points followed by Britney Ho with 10.
            WSC ended the game making 17 of 51 shots for 33 percent.  The 'Cats were 2 of 14 behind the arc and 16 for 21 at the foul stripe.
            Ashley Sawicki had 12 points and 12 rebounds for St. Cloud State followed by Jada Eggebrecht with 11.
            SCSU was 21 of 45 shooting for 46.7 percent, going 7 of 22 from 3-point range and 9 of 14 at the line.
            The Huskies held a 34-29 edge in rebounding over WSC.  Dahlen hauled in a career-best nine boards for WSC.
            Fitzpatrick had a career-high seven steals with four assists.
            Wayne State visits Bemidji State Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
