Jacob Kneifl worked three innings of one run relief to earn the win as Wayne State completed a four-game NSIC baseball sweep over Bemidji State Sunday afternoon with a 12-9 victory at Frerichs Field in Elkhorn. WSC is now 4-0 on the year while BSU is 0-4.
Bemidji State held a 1-0 lead until WSC came up with a four-run third inning.
Trey Wells had a two-run single,
Colin Lynam an RBI double and Thomas started the inning with an RBI single.
WSC added another run in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead as
Chase Douglas delivered an RBI triple to right field scoring
Braden Cannon (hit by pitch).
Bemidji State came up with three runs in the fourth to cut the Wildcat lead to 5-4, but WSC answered with a three-run top of the fifth to take an 8-4 lead. Cannon's two-run single was the key hit in the inning.
The 'Cats added two runs in the sixth for a 10-4 cushion as
Quinn McCafferty laced a two-run single.
After Bemidji State scored in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 10-5, Wayne State scored their final two runs of the game in the eighth for a 12-5 advantage. Thomas singled and later scored on a balk while Lynam was hit by a pitch and crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Wells for the second Wildcat run.
Bemidji State took advantage of a couple walks and hit batter and hit a three-run homer while scoring a fourth run in the eighth inning to close the scoring in the 12-9 victory.
Wayne State had 11 hits in the win, led by Thomas' four-hit game. McCafferty added two hits with two RBI. Douglas had a triple while
Colin Lynam and
Kyler Essink each doubled.
Junior starter
Kolt Davis worked the opening 3 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and four runs with five strikeouts and three walks. Six relievers also pitched in the game as junior lefthander
Jacob Kneifl fired three innings, giving up just two hits and one run with three strikeouts to collect the win.
Sophomore closer
Braden Cannon pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to record the save.
Wayne State's next scheduled action is a four-game NSIC neutral site series vs. Minnesota Crookston in Fort Scott, Kansas February 21, 22 and 23.
