Late surge gives #8 MSU Moorhead 72-61 win over Wildcats

            #8 MSU Moorhead held Wayne State without a point in the final 4:04 after WSC cut the Dragons lead from 14 down to one point allowing the host Dragons to top Wayne State 72-61 in a Northern Sun Conference men's basketball game played Friday evening at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minnesota.  MSUM improves to 22-3 and 16-3 in the NSIC while WSC slips to 13-13 and 6-13 in league play.
            The 'Cats got off to a slow start as the host Dragons scored the first eight points of the game before David Harmon hit a 3-pointer at the 13:37 mark to get WSC on the board.
            MSU Moorhead built a 16-6 lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the half and WSC never got closer than five points the rest of the half (17-12) as the Dragons built a 33-24 lead at intermission.
            The host Dragons opened the second half strong and took their biggest lead of the night at 44-30 with 14:05 to play when WSC started a comeback.
            MSU Moorhead still led 46-35 when the 'Cats used a Harmon 3-pointer and Trey Deveaux basket to close within six at 46-40 with 12:16 to go.
            Wayne State slowly chipped into the Dragon lead and was within one twice late in the game – 58-57 with 6:01 to play following a Harmon layup and 62-61 with 4:04 remaining after a jumper by Deveaux.
            But Wayne State missed their final seven shots of the game and MSU Moorhead held the Wildcats without a point the rest of the way and sealed the victory with free throws for a 72-61 win over the Wildcats.
            Deveaux had 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting to lead Wayne State in scoring while Harmon added 17 points with 14 coming in the second half.
            Wayne State made 25 of 58 shots for 43.1 percent.  The 'Cats were 4 of 15 from 3-point range and 7of 13 at the line.
            JaMir Price poured in 20 points for MSU Moorhead.  Dane Zimmer added 17, Jacob Beeninga scored 13 and Ja'Kir Sanchez had 12 points.
            MSU Moorhead shot 45.8 percent on 22 of 48 shots.  The Dragons were just 1 of 13 from the 3-point line and held a big advantage at the free throw line making 27 of 34 free throws, 20 more made free throws than WSC.
            The Dragons won the rebounding battle 38-28.  Jay Saunders and Deveaux each had six boards for the 'Cats.
            Wayne State visits Minnesota Crookston Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
