Dylan Sweeney was 2 for 4 with a grand slam and five RBI in Wayne State's 13-6 loss Saturday afternoon to host Emporia State at the Emporia State 6-State Classic Softball Tournament in Emporia, Kansas. The host Hornets are now 5-6 on the year while WSC is 1-5.
WSC opened the scoring in the top of the first with one run as
Jordyn Klein reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a single up the middle by Sweeney for a 1-0 Wildcat advantage.
Emporia State responded with two runs in the first, five in the second and four in the third for an 11-1 lead.
Wayne State kept the game alive in the fifth inning with five runs, highlighted by a grand slam homer to left field by Sweeney that scored
Haylee Weber,
Louisa Stowman and
Masyn Bunnell to cut the Emporia State lead to 11-6.
The host Hornets added two insurance runs in the sixth inning to close the scoring making the final 13-6.
Wayne State had 10 hits in the game, led by Sweeney's grand slam and five RBI going 2 for 4 at the plate. First baseman
Mary Krystofiak was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles while
Jordyn Rochholz, Stowman, Weber,
Emilee Marth, Bunnell and
Annika Manzanares each singled.
Starting pitcher Sami Felt (1-2) was tagged with the loss in the circle working 1 1/3 innings while sophomore reliver
Sophie Stuart pitched the final 4 2/3 innings.
The Wildcats play two more games Sunday at the Emporia State 6-State Classic, facing Rockhurst at 2:30 p.m. and host Emporia State at 4:45 p.m.
