Glenville State of West Virginia made the most of five hits while also taking advantage of five Wayne State errors as the Pioneers blanked the Wildcats 5-0 Tuesday afternoon at the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament in Auburndale, Florida. GSU is now 3-4 while the Wildcats drop to 2-16.
The Pioneers opened the scoring with three runs on three hits in the second inning for a 3-0 lead.
Wayne State threatened to score in the fourth inning as
Jordyn Rochholz and
Annika Manzanares singled and put runners on second and third with just one out, but the 'Cats could not get another hit to score a run.
The 'Cats left two runners on base again in the fifth inning as
Mary Krystofiak and
Jordyn Klein both singled but were left stranded on base to keep the score 3-0.
Glenville State added two runs in the seventh on one hit, two walks and a pair of Wildcat errors to make the final score 5-0.
Both teams had five hits in the game. Rochholz was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles while Klein, Manzanares and Krystofiak each singled.
Junior Sami Felt started the game in the circle for the Wildcats, working four innings allowing just three hits and three runs. Junior
Grace Lucka worked the next two innings and gave up an unearned run while senior
Callie Carraher pitched the final inning and allowed one hit and an unearned run.
The Wildcats resume play on Thursday at the National Training Center Spring Softball Games facing Northwood (Mich.) at 11:15 a.m. and Missouri-St. Louis in a 2 p.m. contest.
