Late scoring surge gives Northwood win over Wildcats

3/7/2024 3:05:00 PM

Box Score             Northwood (Mich.) snapped a scoreless tie with four runs in the fourth inning and scored in every inning the rest of the game to defeat Wayne State 9-0 Thursday afternoon at the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament in Auburndale, Florida.  The Timberwolves move to 7-4 with the win while WSC drops to 2-17.
The two teams played three scoreless innings to open the game, but Northwood produced four runs on four hits in the top of the fourth to grab a 4-0 advantage.
Wayne State started strong in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with one out, but could not get another runner on base to end the scoring threat.  Freshman Lillie Timm walked followed by singles from Annika Manzanares and Mary Krystofiak that loaded the bases with just one out, but a fielder's choice and pop up ended the inning.
Northwood added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 6-0 lead and scored three more runs in the seventh to close the 9-0 win.
Wayne State had three hits in the game, singles by Jordyn Klein, Manzanares and Krystofiak.
Senior Callie Carraher (0-4) worked the first four innings in the circle for the Wildcats.  Junior Grace Lucka pitched the next two innings with Payton Kincaid working the final inning.
Wayne State was scheduled to face Missouri-St. Louis Thursday afternoon at the NTC Spring Games in Florida.
