Minnesota Duluth scored on a penalty kick with one minute remaining to forge a 1-1 tie against Wayne State in NSIC women's soccer played Friday afternoon at the WSC Soccer Pitch. The Wildcats are now 3-2-2 and 2-0-1 in the NSIC while the visiting Bulldogs are 1-4-1 and 1-2-1 in league play.
Wayne State held a 7-4 edge in shots during a scoreless first half while the Bulldogs had four of the five corner kicks in the opening half.
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard near the 61
st minute when
Morgan Rhodes scored in front of the goal with assists by
Paige Pemberton and
Erin Peters to put WSC in front 1-0.
The score remained 1-0 until one minute left in the contest when the Wildcats were called for a hand ball inside the box resulting in a Minnesota Duluth penalty kick. UMD's Anna Tobias kicked the ball in the lower right corner of the goal to tie the score at 1-1 ending the contest in a tie.
Minnesota Duluth ended the game with an 11-10 edge in shots while WSC had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. UMD was 8-4 in front on corner kicks while the Bulldogs were called for seven fouls to four on WSC.
Rhodes scored her first goal of the season and had three shots to lead the Wildcats. Alaina Sorenson added two shots with one on goal while
Maia Vacks also had one shot on goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Sidney Truman recorded three saves in the contest while allowing one goal.
Wayne State is at home again Sunday afternoon hosting St. Cloud State in a 1 p.m. contest at the WSC Soccer Complex.
