Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Northern State edges Wildcats 2-1

Despite Morgan Mancuso's team-leading fifth goal midway through the first half to give Wayne State a 1-0 lead, Northern State rallied with two goals late in the first half to hold up for a 2-1 Northern Sun Conference women's soccer win over the Wildcats Friday afternoon at the WSC Soccer Pitch.  The Wildcats drop to 5-5-4 and 4-5-2 in the league while the Wolves improve to 5-6-3 and 5-3-3 in NSIC play.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Mancuso gathered the ball off NSU goalkeeper Ilee Neemeyer following a shot from Alaina Sorensen and put the ball in the right corner of the net giving WSC a 1-0 lead at the 22:42 mark.
Just over 12 minutes later Northern State evened the score when Alexis Phillips recorded her second goal of the season at the 34:51 mark to make it a 1-1 contest.
The eventual go-ahead goal by Northern State with just under five minutes remaining in the first half was allowed after a video review to make sure a Wolves player was not offside, allowing Chloe Voss' goal at the 40:15 mark to count giving Northern State a 2-1 lead.
NSU ended the first half with a 9-3 edge in shots and 4-2 in shots on goal.
Wayne State opened the second half with a pair of shots on goal in the first seven minutes, but could not get the ball past Northern State's goalkeeper to tie the score.  The 'Cats had just one other shot the remainder of the half coming in the final four minutes from Paige Pemberton that sailed high and Northern State held on for the 2-1 victory.
The Wolves ended the contest with a 14-6 advantage in shots and 6-4 in shots on goal.  NSU held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks while both teams were whistled for 13 fouls.
Mancuso scored her fifth goal of the season and had two shots to lead WSC.  Tyler Donaldson, Sorensen and Nevaeh James each recorded one shot on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Hofstetter played the first 45 minutes and recorded one save while allowing two goals.  Freshman Katelyn Miller made two saves in goal playing the final 45 minutes.
The Wildcats play their final home game of the season Sunday afternoon hosting NSIC newcomer Jamestown at the WSC Soccer Pitch starting at 1 p.m.
