Four different players scored goals as Wayne State College defeated the University of Jamestown 4-2 Sunday afternoon in the home finale for the Wildcat women's soccer team at the WSC Soccer Pitch. WSC improves to 6-5-4 and 5-5-2 in league play while the visiting Jimmies drop to 2-11-1 and 2-9-1 in NSIC contests.
Wayne State opened the scoring 15 minutes into the contest when senior
Paige Pemberton scored with an assist from senior forward
Reagan Allen putting the 'Cats in front 1-0.
WSC ended the opening half with a 9-6 edge in shots while both teams had five shots on goal.
The 'Cats had the wind at their back in the second half and scored a pair of goals on long, wind-aided shots early in the second half to take control of the contest. The first came from
Alaina Sorensen from left of the box as the ball sailed over the Jamestown goalkeeper's hands for a goal at the 51:45 mark to make the score 2-0. Nearly 30 seconds later
Reagan Allen blasted a shot from outside the box for another Wildcat goal and a 3-0 lead.
The fourth and final goal from Wayne State came off a corner kick when
Alyssa Ferin played the ball into the front of the net with sophomore
Rachel Davis scoring a goal at the 61:33 mark for a 4-0 Wildcat lead.
Jamestown scored two goals late in the contest with the final one coming with just three seconds remaining on a free kick following a Wildcat yellow card making the final score 4-2.
Wayne State ended the contest with an 18-10 advantage in shots while both teams had eight shots on goal.
Allen had four shots (two on goal) with a goal and an assist to lead a balanced Wildcat attack. Davis added two shots on goal and one goal while Pemberton and Sorensen also scored for the 'Cats.
Freshman
Katelyn Miller started the game in goal and played just over 62 minutes, recording six saves to earn the win.
Wayne State is on the road next weekend playing at St. Cloud State Friday at 1 p.m. followed by a Sunday afternoon 1 p.m. contest at #2 Minnesota State.
