Wayne State College men's basketball team used a huge second half to come back and beat the Newman University Jets in a non-conference battle.
Matt Noll led the 'Cats with 17 points followed by
Andrew Stokes and
JJ Ferrin with 16 each. WSC improves to 3-1 and the Jets move to 2-2.
Newman jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the contest and would never surrender the lead to the Wildcats. WSC would trail at the break 33-29.
WSC was able to cut the lead down to one six times throughout the half, one coming from an
Eldon Turner triple with 8:52 left on the clock. There was one tie in the first half at the 3:04 mark when
Andrew Stokes made a fast break layup after a
Matt Noll steal.
Stokes would lead the 'Cats with 10 points as they went into the halftime break.
WSC opened the second half with a
JJ Ferrin triple and a Stokes bucket to take their first lead of the game. Wayne State would stretch their lead out to eight points, the largest lead of the night after a fast break lay in from
Darshan Thomas.
The Jets regained the lead at the 7:22 mark after a three pointer. They connected on another three to build a four point lead before WSC used buckets from
Aurrion Harris,
Kai Smith, and Ferrin.
The Wildcats would make free throws down the stretch to hold off and comeback attempt. Noll led with 17 points and five rebounds. Harris led the team with seven rebounds to go with his 10 points.
Smith dished out a team high six assists. Ferrin poured in 16 points and had three steals.
WSC shot a hot 65% field goal percentage in the second half and made 18 of their 23 free throws in the final 20 minutes of play.
The Wildcats open Northern Sun Conference play on Tuesday, November 25
th hosting Augustana in Rice Auditorium with tip off set for 7:30 p.m.
