Sophomore guard
Emma Frost poured in a game-high 17 points and all 13 Wildcat players scored as Wayne State cruised past Hesston College 95-27 Monday evening in a non-conference women's basketball contest played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC moves to 6-1 on the year while the visiting Larks drop to 4-10.
The Wildcats never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 29-9 lead in the first quarter as WSC made 13 of 24 shots while forcing 13 first quarter turnovers on Hesston. Frost and
Kelsey Willems each had six points in the opening quarter for the 'Cats.
WSC continued to build on their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Larks 26-7 to take a commanding 55-16 lead at intermission.
Sammie Allen and
Ella Sharar each had five points for the 'Cats in the second quarter, who made 11 of 20 shots to close the first half.
The 'Cats held Hesston to just one basket in the third quarter and WSC outscored the Larks 16-3 to hold a 71-19 advantage after three quarters.
It was all reserves in the fourth quarter as WSC closed the game connecting on 10 of 15 shots in the final stanza as
Katelyn Diegnau scored a team-high seven points with Frost adding six and Wayne State closed with a convincing 95-27 win.
Frost paced the Wildcats in scoring with 17 points followed by
Addy Johnson and
Meg Rietz with 10 points apiece.
Wayne State shot 51.4 percent from the field making 38 of 74 shots. The 'Cats were 11 of 25 from the 3-point line and 8 for 14 at the charity stripe.
For Hesston, Sarah Beltran scored nine points. The Larks made 12 of 55 shots for 21.8 percent including 3 of 17 from 3-point range.
The Wildcats held a 45-34 edge in rebounding over Hesston with Johnson hauling in six rebounds. Kelsey Williams had eight steals and six assists while
Jessica Black and
Kylah vanDonkersgoed each had two blocked shots.
Wayne State forced 30 turnovers in the contest and recorded 17 steals.
The Wildcats return to Northern Sun Conference play Wednesday evening hosting Sioux Falls in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.
