Wayne State women's basketball team used 14 three-pointers to get past Augustana on the road this afternoon, 72-68.
Maya Fitzpatrick led in scoring with her 27 points, shooting 50% from the floor and 88% from the free throw line. WSC scored a season high 32 points in the opening quarter, hitting nine triples. Augie would fight back into the game, as they forced the Wildcats to turn the ball over late in the contest to make it a 72-68 Wayne State victory.
In the first quarter, Wayne State shot a staggering 71% from the floor with nine made three-pointers.
Maya Fitzpatrick and
Carsyn Boswell combined for a perfect 7-7 beyond the arc and
Delaney Clark added the other two shooting 50%. The 'Cats poured in 32 points in the first ten minutes of play and held a 21-point lead over the Vikings.
WSC continued to shoot the lights out in the second quarter, as they connected on 50% of their field goal attempts in the second quarter and put in four more triples. Fitzpatrick stayed perfect from the arc with a pair of threes. Augie settled in and outpaced Wayne State with their 21-point second quarter and cut the Wildcats lead to 26 points at the break.
Fitzpatrick led the team with 20 points at the break and Boswell tossed in 15 points as the cats shot 61% from the field.
The third quarter favored Augustana, seeing them cut the Wildcat lead to six points with two minutes left in the quarter.
Kylah vanDonkersgoed extended the lead back out to nine after her three point bucket only for the Vikings to convert an and-one layup.
A pair of Fitzpatrick free throws and a layup to close out the quarter gave WSC back the double digit lead as time expired in the third.
Two more free throws from Fitzpatrick built the lead out to 12 points for Wayne two minutes into the final quarter. WSC started to throw turnovers as AU pushed the pace and forced the 'Cats into making mistakes.
AU chipped at the lead, cutting it to three points at one point but were unable to get any closer and missed their last two field goal attempts.
WSC held onto the road in to improve to 10-10 overall and 7-9 in the NSIC and AU drops to 4-18 and 2-14.
Wayne State's 14 three pointers is tied fourth in school history, the last time 14 threes were made was back in 2022 against Ft. Lewis. The 'Cats made 16 of their 21 free throw attempts and forced 12 Viking turnovers.
Tate Norblade set a new career high with seven assists in the game.
