MSU Moorhead women top WSC 57-50 in NSIC Tournament opener

Box Score             Wayne State could not overcome a 22-6 deficit in the first quarter as the Wildcats fell at MSU Moorhead Wednesday evening 57-50 in the opening of the 2025 Northern Sun Conference Women's Basketball Tournament played at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minnesota.  The host Dragons move to 14-15 with the win while WSC ends the year with an 11-16 record.
            MSU Moorhead jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and was in front 14-4 with 3:22 to play in the first quarter before closing with a 22-6 advantage after one quarter.  The 'Cats made just 3 of 12 shots from the field and had seven turnovers in the opening stanza.
            Despite shooting better in the second quarter (6 of 12 for 50 percent), WSC could not make up ground on the host Dragons as MSU Moorhead maintained their double-digit lead.  MSUM held a 15-13 scoring advantage in the quarter and closed the first half with a 37-19 lead.
            The Dragons continued their advantage on the 'Cats in the third quarter, taking their biggest lead of the night at 50-29 with 1:38 to play in the quarter before finishing the third quarter with a 52-34 cushion.
            WSC scored eight quick points to start the fourth quarter as Carsyn Boswell and Kylah vanDonkersgoed each hit 3-pointers followed by a jumper from Boswell that cut the Dragon advantage to 10 at 52-42 with 7:55 remaining.
            MSU Moorhead was able to score the next five points to go up 57-42 with 3:37 to play.  Senior Delaney Clark sank a pair of 3-pointers with Tate Norblade sinking a pair of free throws to make the final score 57-50.
            The lone Wildcat in double figures was vanDonkersgoed with 10 points.  Boswell and Norblade each finished with eight.
            WSC was 18 of 51 shooting for 35.3 percent, going 8 for 23 from the 3-point line and 6 for 7 at the free throw line.
            Ashton Safranski scored a game-high 17 points for MSU Moorhead with Natalie Jens and Abby Berge each chipping in 10 points.
            MSU Moorhead shot just 31.8 percent for the game making 21 of 66 shots.  The Dragons were 6 for 19 behind the arc and 9 of 11 at the charity stripe.
            The Dragons won the rebounding battle over the Wildcats 44-32.  The top rebounder for WSC was vanDonkersgoed with six boards.  She also had three blocked shots, two steals and two assists. 
            The game marked the final contest for five Wildcat seniors – Carsyn Boswell, Delaney Clark, Maya Fitzpatrick, Abby Kopecky and Tate Norblade.
