Queens College (NY) took an early lead and never trailed in hanging on to defeat Wayne State 4-3 Wednesday morning at the National Training Center Spring Softball Games in Clermont, Florida. WSC drops to 14-9 with the loss while Queens is now 3-4.
The Wildcats played from behind in the first part of the game as Queens College scored twice in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
Wayne State got one run back in the bottom of the first as
Jordyn Klein singled and later scored on a
Kennadi Borngrebe sacrifice fly.
The Knights scored another run in the top of the second to grab a 3-1 advantage on the 'Cats.
The Wildcats tied the score in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs with two outs and just one runner on base. Klein started the inning with an infield single to shortstop. After two outs, Borngrebe singled to shortstop and
Jordyn Rochholz walked to load the bases. Freshman
Maddie Scobee then followed with a two-run single that brought home Klein and
Leah Chance (fielder's choice) to make the score 3-3.
Queens College regained the lead in the top of the fifth with one run to take a 4-3 lead.
The 'Cats threatened to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth when Borngrebe tripled to centerfield but was left stranded.
WSC had a one-out walk in the sixth and a leadoff single by Klein in the seventh but could not get more runners on base to tie the game and the Knights held on for the 4-3 victory.
Queens had one more hit than WSC 8-7. Klein finished 3 for 4 at the plate while Borngrebe was 2 for 3 with a triple and run scored. Scobee added a two-run single while Chance singled and scored one run.
Starter
Grace Lucka (3-1) was tagged with the loss, working two innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Senior Sami Felt pitched the final five innings and gave up just one run on four hits with two strikeouts.
Wayne State will close out their Florida trip late Wednesday morning with a game against Ohio Dominican.
