Kennadi Borngrebe fired her seventh complete game of the season Sunday afternoon, leading the Wayne State softball team to an 11-1 win in the opener of a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader against the University of Mary. The second game saw the Marauders rally for a 9-8 win to split the twinbill that moved from Bismarck, North Dakota to the Minot Dome in Minot due to cold weather. WSC is now 17-11 and 1-1 in the NSIC while UMary is 9-20 and 1-1 in league play.
The opener saw Borngrebe shut down the Marauders to just one run while the Wildcats took advantage of seven walks by UMary pitching to go with eight hits in rolling to an 11-1 win.
Jordyn Klein opened the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Leah Chance for an early 1-0 WSC lead.
The 'Cats added another run in the fourth when
Taylor Coleman singled and scored when
Maddie Scobee reached on an error for a 2-0 Wildcat lead.
After UMary scored to make it 2-1, WSC scored three times each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to pull away for the 11-1 win.
Coleman had a two-run double to highlight the fifth inning. Chance had a two-run single while
Emilee Marth produced an RBI double for big hits in the sixth while pinch-hitter
Haylee Weber laced a three-run homer in the seventh to close the scoring.
Chance was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and three RBI for WSC at the plate while Coleman went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Weber added a three-run homer while Klein tripled and scored three times for the 'Cats.
Borngrebe improved to 9-5 on the season with her complete-game win, fanning eight batters while allowing one run on six hits.
The second game saw the host Marauders rally for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to edge the 'Cats 9-8.
WSC took a 4-0 lead in the second thanks to a two-run double from
Jordyn Rochholz and an RBI single by
Lauren Laudick.
Mary got two runs back in the bottom of the second, but WSC pushed the lead back to four at 6-2 with a pair of runs in the third on a two-run single from Coleman.
The Marauders cut into the Wildcat lead with a pair of runs in the fourth making the score 6-4, but WSC came right back with two in the top of the fifth for an 8-4 lead. Marth doubled for the lone hit of the inning, scoring on a fielder's choice by Coleman.
But UMary struck for five runs in the bottom of the fifth on four hits that included a three-run homer as the Marauders rallied for the win to gain a split with the Wildcats.
Both teams had eight hits in the contest. Marth was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored while Scobee went 2 for 2 with a pair of singles. Rochholz doubled and two RBI while Coleman drove in three runs.
Starter
Grace Lucka worked the first 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Reliever
Samantha Felt (2-3) suffered the loss giving up five runs in the final 2.1 innings on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Next up for the Wildcats will be home NSIC doubleheaders next weekend as Wayne State hosts Minnesota Duluth Saturday at 12 p.m. followed by a Sunday 12 p.m. doubleheader vs. St. Cloud State.
