Kennadi Borngrebe fired six shutout innings and added a two-run double while freshman
Maddie Scobee added a two-run homer to lead Wayne State in a 5-0 win over Clarion (Pa.) Friday morning to open play at the National Training Center Softball Spring Games held at Legends Way in Clermont, Florida. The Wildcats are now 8-7 on the season while the Clarion Golden Eagles drop to 4-9 on the season.
The 'Cats opened the scoring in the second inning when
Lillie Timm walked and scored on a home run to center field by Scobee for a 2-0 lead.
Three more runs were scored by the Wildcats in the third inning as
Emilee Marth doubled followed by a single from
Taylor Coleman with both players scoring on a Borngrebe double to center field for a 4-0 Wayne State advantage. Borngrebe later scored on a
Mary Krystofiak RBI single to left field for the final Wildcat run.
The rest of the game was controlled by Borngrebe in the circle, who allowed just four hits over six scoreless innings of work with 10 strikeouts. Senior
Grace Lucka sealed the shutout with a perfect seventh inning striking out two of three batters to preserve the shutout win.
Wayne State had seven hits in the game to four by Clarion. Scobee had a two-run homer with Borngrebe adding a two-run double. Marth and
Hayley Murphy each doubled for the 'Cats.
Borngrebe, now 5-3 on the season, earned the pitching win. It was the first shutout over an NCAA Division II school dating back to April 7, 2023 when Lucka fired a one-hit shutout in a 4-0 win at the University of Mary.
The Wildcats face West Virginia Wesleyan Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the NTC Spring Games in Florida.
