Eckerd College of Florida denied Wayne State the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Tritons edged the Wildcats 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the National Training Center Spring Softball Games in Clermont, Florida. Eckerd sits at 14-8 with the win while WSC slips to 12-8.
Both teams scored runs in the third and fifth innings in the tightly contested battle.
Eckerd took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but WSC answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning as
Maddie Scobee singled and later scored on an
Emilee Marth infield single to second making the score 1-1.
The Tritons plated three runs in the top of the fifth for a 4-1 lead, but Wayne State countered by scoring twice to cut the Eckerd lead to one at 4-3.
Jordyn Klein singled and crossed home plate on a single to center field by Marth for the first Wildcat run.
Leah Chance (fielder's choice) scored on the next at bat as
Kennadi Borngrebe singled to cut the Triton lead to 4-3.
Neither team threatened to score until the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh. Klein led off the inning with a triple to left field. A two-out walk to Borngrebe put runners at the corners with two outs but Eckerd starting pitcher Brandilyn Reymer was able to end the game with a strikeout as the Tritons held on for the 4-3 victory.
Wayne State held a 9-7 edge in hits over Eckerd. Klein was 2 for 4 with a triple and run scored. Marth had a pair of RBI singles, going 2 for 4 with two RBI.
Jordyn Rochholz added a double.
Borngrebe (6-4) was the hard-luck loser for the 'Cats in the circle, throwing a complete game allowing just four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Wayne State resumes play on Tuesday at the National Training Center Spring Games, facing Bentley (Mass.) at 8 a.m. and Northwood (Mich.) in a 1 p.m. contest at Clermont, Florida.
