Wayne State Baseball defeated the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears in this afternoon's double header matchup with late game homers.
Nate Cunningham sent one to center field for a three-run homer in game one and
Braden Cannon hit two of his own in game two to help secure the win. WSC improves to 19-14 overall and 15-9 in conference will the Golden Bears drop to 15-19 and 11-13 in the NSIC.
In the first game of the double-header the Wildcats took advantage of a CSP error and scored three runs on a
Kaden Young double with the bases loaded. The Golden Bears responded with a four run second inning.
Casey Prychak doubled in the second inning and
Braden Cannon was able to get home to tie the score up at four runs apiece.
Chase Douglas earned an RBI as Prychak scored and the 'Cats regained a one run lead.
Concordia-St. Paul tied it back up at 5-5 with a single to the gap in right center that allowed a runner to score in the third. They followed up in the fourth inning with a three RBI triple.
Cunningham walked up to the plate with two runners on in the bottom of the fifth inning. On the third pitch, he would crush it dead center to make it a tied up game for the fourth time. In the same inning, WSC took command of the lead as Prychak hit another double that allowed Cannon to score the leading run.
WSC took game one 9-8 with
Josh Kilzer earning the win with four strikeouts and only one hit after he came into the ball game in the fourth.
Game two WSC took the first lead with a two-run moon shot from Cannon. CSP would use a Wildcat error to score their first run to make it 2-1 after three.
CSP's Kaden Johnson sent a homer out to left field, tacking on two runs for the Golden Bears to make it a 3-2 ball game. Cannon stepped up to the plate for his second at bat and on the seventh pitch sent it out of the park for the second time in the game. Prychak would follow up with a homerun on the very next pitch to give Wayne State back the lead.
WSC added on two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Taylor Gill doubled down the left field line that allowed Douglas to score and then Gill would score a run after a
Quinn McCafferty single up the middle.
WSC won game two 6-3 and will look to get the series sweep tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch schedule for 12 p.m. at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne, Neb.
