Game Recap: Softball |

Big days from Marth, Scobee lead Wildcats in sweep at Sioux Falls

Sophomore outfielder Emilee Marth homered in both games while freshman third baseman Maddie Scobee accounted for four hits on the day to lead the Wayne State softball team in a 6-4 and 3-2 Northern Sun Conference sweep at the University of Sioux Falls Saturday afternoon.  With the wins, WSC is now 28-19 and 13-10 in the NSIC while the host Cougars drop to 21-25 and 9-15 in conference play.
The opener saw Scobee go 3 for 3 with three RBI while Marth homered to give the 'Cats the lead for good in a 6-4 win.
Scoreless after two innings, WSC produced four runs in the third to take the lead.  Scobee's bases-loaded clearing double was the key hit in the inning as the 'Cats took advantage of two Sioux Falls errors.  Leah Chance had the other hit in the inning, a single.
Sioux Falls responded though with three runs in the third to cut the Wildcat lead to 4-3 and scored another run in the fourth to tie the score at 4-4.
But Marth led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer putting the 'Cats in front 5-4 and then in the sixth drew a bases loaded walk that brought home Mary Krystofiak (single) with an insurance run to make the final score 6-4.
WSC held a 10-9 advantage in hits on Sioux Falls.  Scobee was a perfect 3 for 3 with a double and three RBI to power the Wildcat offense while Marth homered and had two RBI.  Chance finished 2 for 3 with a double and single while Taylor Coleman was 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and run scored.
Starter Kennadi Borngrebe worked the first 3 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts.  Reliever Samantha Felt was stellar in relief throwing the final 3 1/3 innings allowing no runs on three hits with one strikeout to record the win.
The second game saw the 'Cats take an early 3-0 lead, then use strong pitching late to conclude the sweep with a 3-2 win over the Cougars.
Marth opened the scoring for WSC in the first with a two-out homer to give the 'Cats a 1-0 advantage.
Scobee singled to open the second and scored on a two-out, two-run homer from senior Lauren Laudick to put WSC in front 3-0.
Sioux Falls scored single runs in the second and fifth innings to cut the Wildcat lead to 3-2, but sophomore reliever Taylor Coleman came on in the sixth and completely shut the door on any Cougar comeback by fanning six batters in the final two innings giving up just one hit as WSC held on for the 3-2 win.
USF held an 8-5 edge in hits on WSC in the second game.  Marth was 2 for 3 with a solo homer while Laudick added a two-run homer for the Wildcat offense.  Jordyn Klein and Scobee each singled with Scobee scoring the other Wildcat run.
Senior Grace Lucka worked five innings in the circle to earn the pitching win, now 5-3 on the season.  She fanned seven batters and walked just one allowing two runs on seven hits.  Coleman was superior in her two innings of relief to notch the save striking out six batters in two innings and giving up just one hit.
The Wildcats hit the road again Tuesday visiting Northwest Missouri State in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
